What’s the difference between Page Authority & Domain Authority?
Your Domain Authority measures the ranking strength of your whole website and its subdomains, Page Authority measures the strength of individual pages within your site. It has a similar scoring algorithm as Domain Authority, from 1-100.
Your site’s authority and your competitors
It would be a waste of your time to work on your site’s authority to reach a higher general ranking, as you would be competing with the big guns mentioned above, Google, Amazon and Wikipedia.
The most useful action to take would be to examine your competitors in your niche market and take steps to rank higher than them.
The steps you can take to increase your Domain Authority:
Off page SEO:
Build your link profile. Considered the most important of all the steps, having a good link profile on your site will build your Domain Authority:
- Include high-quality links from other sites
- Have links from more than one individual domain
- Have incoming links that are applicable
- Remove low-quality or redundant links on your domain
Optimise your page content:
SEO is important for your google search rankings and your Domain Authority. Optimising your page content takes a little time but is well worth it:
- Use your keyword phrase in your page title
- Use keyphrase around three times throughout your content
- Use variants of keywords in your content
- Don’t keyword stuff your content
- Use H1 and H2 titles in your page content
- Include alt-image tags and title tags so Google can reference your images and videos
- Keep the site’s permalinks short and concise
- Use internal links (link to other pages on your site) to give them exposure to the browser and to Google and improve user experience

Create linkable content:
The point of publishing linkable content on your site is not only to provide good quality reading material but also to attract links from other sites (natural link building). Becoming an authority in your field will strengthen your brand and attract traffic to your site.
External links are only useful when they provide value to the reader. They must be relevant to the content on your page. Placing the links within the body of the content has more impact than links placed in footers and sidebars. You should only link to external sites you trust who produce good quality material and are not your direct competitors.
Internal links are valuable in the fact that they help the user go deeper into your site and they learn more about their topic of interest. Linking from older pages to newer pages is as important as linking newer content to older pages. It is recommended to place no more than 10 links per page (internal and external) for readability purposes. However, Google and other search engines will not penalise you for having a greater number of quality links.
Sort your technical SEO:
Conducting an assess your website in terms of visibility on search engines, determining how visitors interact with the site and identify any technical reasons why your website is not ranking as highly as your competitors, is technical SEO. Checking the load speed of your site and any coding issues that slow it down is important for your search engine ranking. If you need some technical SEO done on your site to improve your Domain Authority you should take it to the experts, like us. We have written an article on Technical Website Auditing that explains in detail what is involved. Yoast has also published this article explaining in layman’s terms what is technical SEO.
Make your website responsive:
So many people access the web on their smartphones so your website should be able to work on a mobile phone and a tablet. If it is not responsive you will lose many readers/customers and lower your search rankings.
Work on your social media presence:
Getting active on social media by regular posting of good quality material will increase likes and retweets and encourage backlinking to your website. Having a social share button will make it easier for your message to spread around.
Fast loading website:
There is nothing worse than a slow loading website for users. They will abandon your site in frustration long before the home page loads. It is possible you have purchased your domain from a slow hosting company, and it might be a matter of changing your host.
You can check your website speed and identify issues causing the lag by using Google’s PageSpeed Insight tool.
To finish up, you can have the most beautiful website in the world and have a poor Domain Authority. There is more to building a website than design and coding. Your website needs special care to grow into a strong vehicle for business or whatever its purpose is. Taking steps to improve and maintain a good Domain Authority is vital.
