The NSW Government planned to build a data base for their Young Farmer Business Program which they have funding to run over four years. As a significant element of the program they needed a website aiming to improve connections, knowledge, skills, and experience to better manage risk, strategic management and enhance resilience of young farmers.
We Push Buttons was already involved in building and launching the biggest and most comprehensive farming database, The Farm Table, so it made sense for the department to team up with us and Airlie Trescowthick from the Farm Table to save time and cost. Because we already have the infrastructure, the skills in IT and agricultural connections; a plan was hatched to incorporate the live data feed from The Farm Table to the new Young Farmer Business Program site.
We have built a website where young farmers can stay informed of workshops and events, access online business tools, videos, grants and loans and business coaching. All this is with the aim of supporting young farmers to enter or stay in the game by gaining and updating skills to mitigate risk and be a competent farmer.
Young farmers have a better chance of overcoming isolation and staying informed with an online newsletter and news updates while also being a member of the broader farming community by maintaining a membership with Farmer Exchange, an online peer to peer farmer community.
The Design of young Farmers website uses colour blocks selected from produce and natural colours of the land. The design had to reduced seamlessly onto the mobile or tablet platform given that younger generation farmers spend more time on these devices than on a PC. The site had to be appealing and easy to use while representing the professional tone of a Government funded program. Our designer used actual photos of young farmers involved in the Young Farmer Business Program to make the site more real and personal.
The challenge was to make a completely new look website that was able to be defined from the parent site, The Farm Table; all the while incorporating data feeds and exchanges between the two sites.
WPB is providing ongoing hosting, management and maintenance of the site and helping with marketing and promotion of events as part of the support package. We will be broadcasting Young Farmer events at a hundred locations around NSW.
